The Instruments You'll Hear

Bayan (баян) — the Russian button accordion. Rich, warm, slightly melancholic even when playing something fast. The sound most people associate with Russian folk music.
Balalaika (балалайка) — three strings, triangular body, unmistakable. Surprisingly versatile — from gentle plucking to frantic strumming.
Buben (бубен) — a frame drum, similar to a tambourine. Keeps the dancing rhythm sharp and physical.
Zhaleika (жалейка) — a small wind instrument, sounds somewhere between a flute and a bagpipe. Haunting, rural, ancient.
Gusli (гусли) — the oldest Russian string instrument, similar to a zither. Rarely heard today but gives recordings a distinctly medieval Slavic feel.
